Shri Manipallavam Kanakaratnam Sarangan is one of the leading Carnatic classical musicians. He draws his inspiration from his mother, Sangeetha Bhushanam Srimati Thillainayaki Kanakaratnam, who was also his first guru. His father, Kalabhushanam Subramaniam Kanakaratnam, is a poet, writer and speaker. He then continued his early training under Sangeetha Bhushabam Mr. L. Thilaganayagampaul.
For over seven years, Manipallavam K. Sarangan honed his skills through the gurukula tradition under the legend Padma Shri Sangeetha Kalanidhi Palghat Prof. K. V. Narayanasamy. Prof. K. V. Narayanasamy himself hailed from the lineage of Shri Tyagaraja swami's disciples. With his guru’s sad passing, Manipallavam K. Sarangan undertook tuition from KVN's wife, Mrs Padma Narayansamy until 2008.
Manipallavam K. Sarangan also gained many academic qualifications in Indian classical music. These include: Diploma in Music (1st class – Tamil Music College, Chennai); BA in Music (1st class – Bharathiyar University, Coimbature); MA in Music (1st Class – University of Madras) and M.Phil in Music (Gold Medalist – University of Madras). He is currently in the process of submitting his PhD thesis in music.
He won first prize in the state-level (Tamil Nadu, India) music competition held by Chinmaya Mission, Tamil Nadu, in 1999 and since then he has released eight CDs. Manipallavam K. Sarangan has also been awarded the titles of Thirumurai Isaithilagam and the Thiruvavaduthurai Aadheenam's Deivathamizhisaichelvar, both in India, Isavendhan in Canada and Isai Gnaanachchudar in the UK.
Manipallavam K. Sarangan has performed all over the globe in a number of prestigious locations, including the Bharathiar University Coimbatore and the University of Madras, India. He has also performed at the Goldsmiths, University of London among many other venues in Europe and Canada. The highlight of his musical career so far has been his performance in the presence of the former Presidents of India, His Excellency K. R. Narayanan and His Excellency Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.
Manipallavam K. Saranagan was a part-time lecturer in a personal contact programme conducted by the Institute of Correspondence Education, University of Madras between 2007-2008. Since 2008, Manipallavam K. Sarangan has been teaching at the London Tamil Centre.
In 2018, Manipallavam K. Sarangan was an adjudicator at the prestigious Watford Music Festival in London, for the Carnatic category. He is the founder & director of AarohanA Temple of Aesthetic Fine Arts UK, established in 2009.
Manipallavam K. Sarangan brings South Indian Carnatic music’s 3000 years of history to the present day. His focus, dedication and passion for the art emanates from his vocal performances. Manipallavam K. Sarangan believes in the power of music for the body and the mind. As a vocalist, composer, musicologist and vocal consultant, he holistically passes his art on to the next generation of artists across the globe.
