Sacroiliac joint pain is usually experience in the lower half of the body such as the back, the low back, the hips, the groin and the buttock area. The sacroiliac joint is located towards the bottom of the spine, underneath the lumbar region and above the coccyx tailbone area.
The joint is quite small and does not allow for significant movement but does carry quite a bit of weight in the body. The generative arthritis also known Osteoarthritis is one of the most reported and common causes of Sacroiliac joint pain.
Other elements that can produce inflammation in the sacroiliac joint include things such as gout rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and ankylosing spondylitis. Sacroiliac joint pain can be difficult to diagnose since the symptoms can mere and mimic other health related problems.
Physician will usually start with a thorough physical examination and then we'll move on to diagnostics injection, where they inject a small amount of medicine into the Sacroiliac joint. If the pain immediately goes away and that lets us know that the sacroiliac joint is responsible for much of the pain.
If the sacroiliac joint is diagnosis is being source of the pain, then we try and treat that source; sometimes that just means a steroid injection directly into the joint, other times it can be radiofrequency ablation of cauterizing the nerve that goes to this area and there are some emerging techniques like sacroiliac joint fusion which might be helpful for many patients.
