[Symptoms]
Engine is running rough (Running rough usually indicates: poor fuel flow (Pump/filter/fuel lines etc), ignition issues (plugs and coils / spark) or cylinder compression - These are the main top 3 contenders)
Engine is misfiring (p0300, P0301, P0302 codes etc) (Usually low compression)
Engine knocking or pinging
Low cylinder compression will cause an incomplete burn of the air-fuel mixture your car runs on, resulting in a misfire. Could be many things: valves, piston rings, carbon buildup, head gasket etc.
High cylinder compression can cause a knocking or pinging sound. One such example: This could happen when there is liquid oil and/or high carbon deposits in the combustion chamber. In this case, there isn't as much room for air and fuel to mix. Therefore the pressure can read high.
Wear on components inside the combustion chamber can cause poor compression.
These combustion chamber components are as follows:
1. Piston rings / seals (The bottom seal of the chamber. It's connected to the crankshaft and as the crankshaft rotates, it pushes the piston up into the chamber.)
2. Valve seals (Exhaust valves and intake valves live at the TOP of the combustion chamber. Intake allows air/fuel in, combustion chamber does its thing, then the exhaust gasses leave via the exhaust valves)
3. Head gasket (Gasket sits between the cylinder block and the cylinder head)
4. Warped cylinder head or engine block (As an engine overheats, the head or block can begin to warp, swell, expand and even crack. A warped cylinder head could separate from the engine block, creating a leak in the head gasket)
5. Carbon build up inside the chamber (Can affect the sealing/seating of the piston and/or valves). Lots of short trips can increase carbon buildup as the engine doesn't stay warm for long. A warm engine (freeway driving) is good for some removal of carbon buildup in the combustion chamber.
