In this video, I'll share some of tips and information that might help you to plan your visit to Isle of Skye. Did you know Isle is the old fashion way of saying island! Isle of Skye is located in the northwest of Scotland. It is very close to the mainland and therefore there is a bridge that you could use to enter the island by car. I drove all the way from England to Isle of Skye. Coming back, I took a ferry from Armadale to Mallaig. You could prebook the ferry. It costs 10 pounds 30 for the car and 3 pound 10 per passenger. So, 2 adults and a car would cost you a total of 16 pounds 50 . The ferry only takes 30 minutes to reach the destination. In Mallaig, there are a lots of restaurants and ice cream shops. I recommend you to try the ice cream there.
Now, back to the Isle of Skye. We camped for 4 nights at 2 different campsites. The first one is called Glenbrittle Campsite & Café. It costs 11 pounds per person and you don't have to book in advance. All you need to do is to drive to the reception and pay there. They accept credit cards. The receptionist told us we could book every day for the next day But, we decided to book for 2 nights anyways. Then, you could set up your tent anywhere on the campsite except the areas allocated for camps plus electricity or motor homes. You could get the sea view from most parts of the site but some with restricted views. So, the earlier you're there, the better spot you'll get. This campsite has a great access to the beach. Open fire is allowed on the beach only. This is the closest campsite to the famous attraction site called Fairy Pools. On the way from the campsite to the fairy pools, there is a forest where you could collect woods for the fire on the beach. Water is great for swimming. The water depth increases very gradually. In the middle of July water wasn't too cold but some people might find it cold to swim. From this campsite, you could go for several hiking tracks without the need to drive. But, the most famous and scenic place not to miss is the ferry pools which you'll have to drive to get there.
Ferry Pools has got an allocated pay and display parking space. As the name suggests, it has got a number of pools that is formed from the stream flowing from the mountains. So, don't forget to take your swimming suits or shorts. Even though, at the time we went there, they were fewer mosquitos than usual. Therefore, it is also recommended to wear a head net. Make sure the net mesh is as small as possible and that they're especially designed for Scottish midges rather than ordinary size mosquitos! We bought headnets by the company called smidge. Now, Back to ferry pools, if you're not into swimming, you could just dip your feet into the shallower pools. As soon as you see a big nice pool enclaved in-between rocks, stop and have a look. Don't think that the further you go, the better it'll get. In fact, the first few ones where the largest pools. Some of these pools are very deep so, again, be very careful. As you go up the mountain, pools starts to shrink as well as number of people! You could complete a triangular path rather than just walking back the same path.
Another campsite that we visited is called Kinloch Campsite. It also costs 11 pounds per person per night. However, you'll have to book in advance. The biggest problem with this campsite is that they'll allocate you a spot. Unfortunately, the spot that we got didn't have enough space and we felt a bit cramped among other tents and I'm sure the surrounding tents felt the same about us. You could also ask for a stone to put on the grass to make barbecues. The closest attraction is Dunvegan Castle and garden. Castle and garden costs 14 pounds per person.
Moving on, my favorite place in Isle of Skye has to be The Storr mountain. There is a pay and display car park. It cost 5 pounds for 6 hours and there are other options available. Parking machine accepts credit cards. Believe me or not, 6 hours isn't enough to get to the peak of the mountain and back. The closer you get to the peak, the harder and more dangerous it'll become to go any higher. When we reached to the top of the mountain, we were the only 2 people and some sheep. I wonder how the sheep got there.
The largest town is called Portree. There are a few large supermarkets that are open till 10 pm and are mostly located in Portree. However, most shops close by 6 pm. And don't worry about running out of fuel, as there are petrol pumps in Isle of Skype.
