When The Walking Dead returned to AMC in its third season, it did so with a bang. The season-three premiere now reigns as the most-watched basic cable drama telecast in broadcast history. It delivered 10.9 million total viewers, with 7.3 million in the coveted 18 to 49 demographic. Even its second episode drew in 9.5 million total viewers, claiming 6.5 million in the 18 to 49 group.
In the week following its U.S. debut, FOX International Channels delivered the show to 122 countries across Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The success was much the same in all these markets. The international broadcast premiere runs of season three delivered 8.5 million pay-TV viewers, up 20 percent from the season-two debut.
Sarah Wayne Callies—who stars as Lori Grimes, the now-pregnant wife of the group's ringleader, Rick Grimes—recently sat down with World Screen's Mansha Daswani to discuss the new season. She talks about the challenges that her character, and the group, face in the episodes ahead, and shares her thoughts on the show's enormous fan base and place in pop-culture history.
