The Wind Hashira Sanemi fought against Kokushibo alongside Gyomei, Muichiro and his own younger brother, Genya Shinazugawa. Losing a few fingers along the way, Sanemi managed to deal the final blow on Kokushibo in unison with Gyomei before he passed out. Sanemi using First Form, Whirlwind Dust Cutter to attack Kokushibo.
Sanemi tells Genya that he should've never joined the Demon Slayer Corps and that he should've had a wife and children, and vowed to protect them. This makes Genya shed tears as Sanemi expresses his true feelings towards him.
While he reflects on his motivations, Gyomei is able to crush his head with his flail, again beheading Kokushibo. The Upper Rank attempts to regenerate, but to his disbelief, his flesh begins to crumble away and he is rendered unable to use his Blood Demon Art as a result of Muichiro's red blade stuck in his body.
