NNB - “Slack” 7”
(Wave Seven - W7-1001)
1978
• “Slack”, what a fucking song! I swear I could listen to a 20 hour version of this. 4+ minutes zooms by and never gets dull. Very reminiscent of PERE UBU’s “Final Solution” but a tad more controlled and menacing. In fact, NNB used to cover “Final Solution” in their set back when they were regulars at Jay’s Longhorn in the late 70’s before they pulled up stakes and moved to NY to lead glorious lives as booksellers and wait staff. Sure they played the occasional gig but nothing much happened for them after they left MN. I guess fish and pond sizes swapped during the move eh?
• Speaking of their live shows, multiple people from the early Minneapolis scene have gone on record saying that NNB had one of the most powerful stage presences (‘stage presences’ is so awkward - what am I Mickey fuckin’ Spillane?) around. Hard to conjure if you just know the 7” but I’ve seen a video that proves it with them playing a tune called “Here Comes A Creep” that sadly never got a studio recording as far as I can tell. If only there were live footage of them playing “Slack” from this gig…
