Slovakia’s prime minister Robert Fico was fighting for his life on Wednesday night after being shot several times in an ­assassination attempt.

He is believed to have been hit by at least three bullets, one in the abdomen, as he spoke to voters in Handlova, a town 80 miles northeast of the capital Bratislava. He was bundled into a car by his security team and taken to hospital.
