This week's focus is several trees, shrubs and flowers some won't recognize that grow well here in Northeast Florida.
Dwarf Powderpuff Tree Calliandra Haematocephala ‘Nana’
This dwarf variety reaches 3-6’ in height.
Known for their mimosa like brilliant red pin cushion-like flowers.
Prefer full to partial sun and well drained soil & is not salt tolerance.
USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11.
Fringetree Chionanthus virginicus
This is a showy tree often used as a woodland border.
They reach a modest 13-16’ in height.
Distinctive fringy white flowers.
Prefer full to partial sun.
USDA Hardiness Zones 3-9.
Hibiscus is a tropical plant in the mallow family.
They are known for their large showy brilliant colored trumpet shaped flowers.
Select species are used for teas and to treat a variety of ailments.
They typically prefer temperatures between 60-95 F. and don’t do well below freezing.
Hibiscus benefit from high potassium fertilizers in summer to maximize their blooming potential.
Spirea ‘Anthony Waterer’
Spirea x bumalda 'Anthony Waterer'
A variety of Japanese spirea a fast growing butterfly attractor.
Known for their showy red & pink clusters of flowers the plant itself may vary greatly in stem colors.
Prefers full sun to partial shade.
Grows to typically three feet tall and four feet wide.
Showy in mass planting

Bright colored pinwheel daisy shaped flowers.
Blooms for extended time in Summer.
Tolerates full sun to partial shade.
Drought tolerant.
