Music by Black Sabbath. The most common artillery used by the USA and its anti-communist allies were the M101A1 and M102 105mm howitzers. Both were towed (and could be airlifted by helicopter), and fired a 35lb shell to over 12,000 yards (11 km).
The anti-communists also commonly used two larger 155mm howitzers: the towed M114A1 and the self-propelled tracked M109. Both fired the same 95lb shell to 16,000 yards (14.6 km). The M114A1 could be airlifted by helicopter, usually by breaking it down into two loads.
The USA and its allies also used a range of less common recoilless rifles, towed artillery pieces and tracked self-propelled artillery pieces.
Artillery fire support bases were crucial to US tactics and 'search and destroy' missions generally occurred within range of a fire support base.
