Is your child making an annoying sound to get your attention? Is your child whining for something minor? Maybe try planned ignoring.
What is planned ignoring? Planned ignoring means deliberately not responding when a child seems to be misbehaving just to get a reaction or some attention, according to Robert Lerro, a therapist with Triple P (the Positive Parenting Program).
When you ignore a behavior, don't look at or talk with your child. The behavior may get worse, but you keep on ignoring them. Stay calm and make sure your body language stays calm. As soon as the problem behavior stops and they move on to something else, praise them and give them positive attention.
Of course, planned ignoring is only for minor attention-seeking behavior. If your child is acting up, such as breaking things or fighting, you need to respond right away.
Lerro is part of a team of therapists with Triple P, a FREE program offered by Community Partners of South Florida and funded by Children's Services Council of Palm Beach County. Triple P offers parenting strategies to cope with common childhood behaviors with one-on-one sessions and group sessions. Triple P is available for parents raising children up to age 12. For parents raising teenagers, there is Teen Triple P.
