The song Black Hole Sun by American rock band Soundgarden was released in 1994 from their fourth studio album, Super Unknown. Written by frontman Chris Cornell, the title came from something he heard on the news. He thought the anchor said Black Hole Sun. Cornell started thinking about the phrase and decided to write a song around it, as he felt it was a thought-provoking title. The song won a Grammy in 1995 for Best Rock Performance and spent a total of seven weeks at number one on the U.S. Billboard album rock track chart. The video for Black Hole Sun was directed by Howard Greenhalgh and depicts a suburban neighborhood and its vain inhabitants with exaggerated grins, which are eventually swallowed up when the sun turns into a black hole.
