The EDRi network’s independent report by the Edinburgh International Justice Initiative (EIJI), “The Rise and Rise of Biometric Mass Surveillance in the EU”, reveals stark and compelling evidence of abusive facial recognition and other forms of biometric mass surveillance across the European Union (EU). This research shows that harmful biometric mass surveillance practices have become worryingly normalised by law enforcement, other public authorities and private companies in Germany and the Netherlands – with Poland starting to catch up.
EDRi's Policy Advisor Ella Jakubowska explains the importance of this new evidence for civil society's call on the EU to ban all automated recognition of human features in publicly accessible spaces.
