A research subject in the lab having his phrenic nerves (the nerves supplying the diaphragm) stimulated using a powerful magnet. We call this technique "twitching". The first twitch is performed while the subject performs a maximum breathing effort through the mouthpiece, followed by another twitch immediately afterwards. The subject has tubes going up his nose and down into his stomach to allow measurement of the pressure and electrical activity generated by the diaphragm during the manoeuvres.
