Hurricane Beryl, a Category 4 storm, struck the southeastern Caribbean, making landfall on the island of Carriacou. With winds reaching up to 150 mph (just shy of Category 5 strength), it caused widespread damage. Streets from St. Lucia to Grenada were strewn with debris, including tree limbs and downed power lines. Banana trees snapped in half, and even cows lay in green pastures as if they were sleeping. Homes made of tin and plywood tilted precariously. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries, but communications were largely down across the region. The last strong hurricane to hit this area was Hurricane Ivan 20 years ago, which tragically killed dozens of people in Grenada.
