"Adolf Hitler was an Austrian also, too many other Austrians played an inglorious role in Nazi Germany, senior Austrian officials were at the forefront of Nazi atrocities. We cannot undo what has happened, but we can do two things: apologize for the injustice committed by Austrian perpetrators. And we can ensure that the memory of the victims of the Shoah lives on forever."

"I'm therefore pleased that today we can give the starting signal for even closer cooperation between Austria and Yad Vashem. We will support Yad Vashem in fulfilling the commitments made at the International Forum last year. At the same time, Yad Vashem will help us achieve the goals of the national strategy against anti-Semitism, in the area of education and training. The Federal Chancellery will provide a total of 1.5 million euros for this purpose until 2024."

STORYLINE:
Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust Remembrance Center in Jerusalem on Tuesday.
Nehammer laid a wreath of flowers in the "Hall of Remembrance" and rekindled the eternal flame.
Nehammer signed the guest book and said: "We cannot undo what has happened, but we can do two things: apologize for the injustice committed by Austrian perpetrators. And we can ensure that the memory of the victims of the Shoah lives on forever."
The Austrian Chancellor announced a 1.5 million euro cooperation deal between Austria and Yad Vashem.
"Yad Vashem will help us achieve the goals of the national strategy against anti-Semitism, in the area of education and training," he said.
Nehammer is expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid later Tuesday.
