Most people believe that setting high goals and expectations is motivating and leads to success. Unfortunately, this is a misconception, and instead, often leads to great suffering. Having high, perfectionistic standards for ourselves can create a trap that results too often in depression. We notice a gap between what we expect of ourselves and how we actually perceive ourselves. And this gap creates feelings of shame and self loathing that can result in depression if we are not recognizing the discrepancy and coping well.
