Approximately 3,000 people took to the streets of Barcelona to protest mass tourism in the city on Saturday, July 6, according to local media.
Footage taken by David Melero Peña shows a large group of protesters holding signs and walking in Barcelona on Saturday. Protesters are seen demonstrating in front of restaurants and squirting water from water guns at tourists.
“The protesters and activists point out that mass tourism promotes more precarious workplaces, rising rent prices and the loss of public space, with more and more events being held for tourism instead of projects for the locals,” Peña told Storyful.
In the footage, protesters can be seen arguing with a group of wedding attendees in front of Hotel Duquesa de Cardona Barcelona. Peña told Storyful that the wedding attendees were preventing the protesters from putting up posters and stickers against tourism on the walls of the hotel.
According to a local news report, similar protests against overtourism took place in the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands earlier this year.
