Today you guys get to follow me along as I replace the intermediate steering shaft on my 2011 Chevrolet (Chevy) Silverado 3500 HD. Mine is a 6.0 liter Vortec, but the steps are the same for a Duramax diesel truck as well.
The part number I am using today is a Dorman steering shaft part number 425-183. They run right around $90 to $100 at your local parts store. I waited until Advance Auto Parts sent me a 20% of coupon in my email and used that and got mine for about $78 after tax.
Replacing this part really went a long way to reducing my steering noise or the steering rattling or clunking noise that you hear under the dash or near your feet. At first it almost sounds like your wheel is lose or your strut is shaking, but the more you listen to it you can tell it is actually coming from that U Joint inside the firewall of the truck right above your break pedal.
This is a very simple project that you can do in your driveway in as little as 30 minutes if everything goes right… BUT I rarely have a project where EVERYthing goes right. Instead, it always seems there is one piece… one bolt… or one issue that really holds up the project. But, with that one issue I had, I was able to replace this part in about an hour and half. Now my truck rides much quieter. Time will tell how well the fix holds up.
