(30 Oct 2013) Protesting Muslim Brotherhood supporters stormed the administrative building of Al-Azhar Islamic University in Cairo on Wednesday, hours after police arrested a key Muslim Brotherhood figure.
The protesters smashed windows and equipment, and besieged the office of the head of the university and other administrative staff.
Riot police were called to break up the raid, and managed to free the officials.
"Security forces reacted after the Brotherhood supporters stormed the administration building and damaged its offices," said one university student, Mahmoud Mohamed.
The university, where the Brotherhood has a strong base, has been the scene of near-daily protests since the July coup that toppled President Mohammed Morsi.
The rioters were angry over the arrest of Essam el-Erian, the deputy leader of the Brotherhood's political arm, the Freedom and Justice party, who's been on the run since Morsi was ousted.
El-Erian is accused of inciting Brotherhood followers to break up anti-Morsi protesters who gathered outside the presidential palace late last year.
He is one of the defendants in Morsi's trial which is due to begin on November 4.
