Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750):
MASS IN F MAJOR (QUI TOLLIS) (BWV 233)
Bach wrote 4 masses in the late 1730s, which consist only of Kyrie and Gloria (and thereby omitting Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei). The circumstances around these compositions are not known for sure. Bach made considerable use of existing movements from his cantatas. The "Qui tollis" section of the Gloria is based on a Alto aria from cantata 102 ("Herr, deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben"). Bach transposed it from f minor to g minor and assigned it to a soprano instead.
[Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Fílius Patris,]
Qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.
Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram.
Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis.
[Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,]
You take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
You take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer.
You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.
