Maui Solomon, Hokotehi Moriori Trust CEO, talks about the Moriori elder Nunuku Whenua who laid down the covenant of peace for his people some 500 years ago, one of the most significant events that has shaped the identity and culture of Moriori people today.
Maui is talking to us from the western shore of Te Whanga lagoon on Rēkohu where Nunuku lived and where he is said to have led his people to safety before laying down the covenant.
After explaining the history and reasons for Nunuku'a law, Maui goes on to describe contemporary Moriori responses to conflict resolution, including the 2011 Me Rongo Congress for Peace, Sustainability and Respect for the Sacred, and the 2016 Hokopanopano carving wānanga, which saw the revival of the unique Moriori art of engraving living trees (Rākau Momori).
