Q: What the heck is going on at the end?
A: For most of the piece, Beethoven stays with completely regular four- and eight-measure phrases, but towards the end he breaks it up into one- and two-measure fragments. What I didn't quite realize until I read Michael Steinberg's "Notes on the Quartets" (from The Beethoven Quartet Companion, edited by Robert Winter and Robert Martin, see [ Ссылка ] ) was that at one point he reverses the order of the measures! Here's the diagram from Steinberg's notes:
