Prison workouts are high-paced and typically use minimal space and equipment. The workouts facilitate progressive overload in order to result in muscle and strength gain. With high rep ranges, the rep schemes hone in on a hypertrophic effect to induce a massive pump. Prison workouts often also include plyometric jumps to boost cardiovascular fitness and intensity.Prisoners gain muscle so quickly due to the high rep ranges of the workouts and high workout frequency due to their time available, in combination with as much food as possible. With three square meals a day and additional food available to buy, prisoners could easily put themselves in a calorie surplus (consuming more calories than burning) in order to gain weight.
The prison workout is a concept as old as society. We’ve always had prisons, and prisoners have always had to occupy themselves. It wasn’t until recently that we realized how powerful it can be to just sit in a room and exercise for years at a time.
Prisoners’ lives are rigidly structured but they include a lot of down time – but no equipment (depending on the institution). So prisoners get creative building workouts that are efficient with their time and body weight.
You could learn a thing or two from that proactive approach to exercise. We forget that all movement is exercise, and we can move whether we have an air conditioned gym with the latest equipment or not.
If you’re serious about building fitness, you get it in when, where, and how you can. Prison workouts use calisthenics to make your workouts more reliable, so you can always get something done. This is perfect when you’re in a pinch and life doesn’t make it easy to get your ‘favorite’ exercise done.
Prisons in the UK are currently filled with drugs and violence. They're also over crowded with people doing sentences from murder to shop lifting. Prison workouts are popular on YouTube because they mainly focus on bodyweight exercises which require no equipment. Tony Argent was doing a life sentence for murder but has been currently released. He was in fantastic shape during his prison sentence. He has featured on Yammy Bs YouTube channel and they have both spoken about their time together in the CAT As (dispersal prison system for lifers).
YouTubers like Greg Doucette and More Plates More Dates have called people like Mike O'Hearn a liar and a fake natty. They've also done numerous natty or not videos about other fitness influencers. Greg Doucettes YouTube channel is extremely popular, as he mostly makes videos highlighting the inaccuracy and lies of certain figures within the fitness industry. More Plates More Dates does the same but also scientifically breaks down such supplements as pre workout. People they've targeted on a frequent basis include Simeon Panda, Mike Thurston and Athlean x. More Plates More Dates has also called into question Mike O'Hearns constant assertions that he doesn't take steroids. For a man of his age, to be able to maintain the size and physique he has possessed for many years, almost defies belief that hes 100% natural.
