Hi Everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I am talking about the five most common surgeries I complete as a veterinarian.
As a veterinarian I do everything. One thing I do a lot of is surgery. I am not including the spay and or neuter in my list today, because I have done a ton of these and these are elective procedures.
These surgeries are not in any order, but I wanted to list the most common surgeries that I completed.
1) I removed a very large number of skin and fat masses. On almost a daily basis I am surgically removing a skin and fat mass from a cat or dog. I will first sample the mass with a fine needle aspirate. Mass removal is done to cure the pet and also get to a diagnosis.
2) Dental disease is very common in cats and dogs. The dental abscess or infection or fractured tooth needs surgery. As a veterinarian I will elevated the gum tissue and then drill at some of the jaw bone to allow for me to extract all the damaged roots of the dog or cat's tooth.
3) GI or gastrointestinal foreign bodies are very common. This includes anything that a cat or dog eats and gets stuck in their stomach and intestines. As a veterinarian I will surgically open the stomach or intestines to remove the foreign objection: Sock, corncob, toy...you pick.
4) Bladder stones happen in both cats and dogs. Bladder stones will cause chronic bladder infections. As a veterinarian I will surgically open the bladder and remove the stones.
5) The torn ACL is very common. This is a major surgery that a specialist will need to surgically fix.
