In the midst of the American Civil War, a disillusioned Confederate army deserter returns to his home state of Mississippi, deeply scarred by the brutalities and injustices he witnessed on the battlefield. Disenchanted with the Confederacy's cause and the exploitation of the common people, he finds his community suffering under the oppressive and corrupt rule of the local Confederate government. Determined to make a stand, he begins to rally fellow deserters who share his disillusionment, as well as the courageous women who are left to fend for themselves and their families in the absence of their men.
