STORYLINE:
Japanese troops on Saturday opened a children's playground in the city of Samawah 240 km (150 miles) south of Baghdad.
The playground features childrens play equipment such as swings, slides and climbing frames.
The project was completed by the Japanese self-defence forces, who have been in Iraq since 2004.
The Japanese forces have carried out several humanitarian tasks including the rehabilitation of schools and stadiums and providing hospitals with medical appliances and medicine.
The self-defence forces were sent to Iraq in 2004 at the request of the US government in order to assist the US-led occupation.
The deployment marked a significant turning point in Japan's history as it was the first time since the end of World War II that Japan had sent troops abroad except for a few UN peacekeeping deployments.
