What Are “the Bends” in Scuba Diving? | “The Bends” is more than just a good Radiohead album. For scuba divers, it’s a potentially life-threatening condition. A nickname for decompression sickness, the bends happen when you come up too quickly after a dive. When you swim deep underwater with an oxygen tank, you breathe in air at a higher pressure than normal, which causes extra gas to release into your blood. With all this extra pressure, your body is kind of like a shaken can of soda. Release it too fast and gas bubbles form, cutting off circulation and causing joint pain, rashes, loss of balance and — in extreme cases — paralysis and even death. But you can avoid the bends. Just remember to take it slow.
