In this video, I will give you a quick overview of what a Gorge or Canyon is. You would be walking around one out of 7 Gorges in New Zealand with me in the rural town of Hokitika.
Definition of Gorge/Canyon: A deep, narrow valley with very steep sides, usually where the river passes through a mountain or an area of hard rock.
The 7 Gorges in NZ are: Hokitika, Buller, Karangahake, Karapoti, Ngauranga, Mamawatu and Windy Gorge.
Hokitika Gorge and the surrounding is scenic reserve and a major tourist destination. It takes about a minimum of 15minutes to walk around the gorge. Hokitika gorge untamed natural wilderness is a 33km or 40minutes drive from Hokitika inland town. The vivid turquoise water surrounded by lush native bush is well worth a visit if you are a lover of nature.
Reality: It worth a visit.
Expectations: Sandfly bite is something you should prepare for.
Colour of the river is dependent on the sun reflection.
The track is not readily accessible by wheelchairs/ strollers
No shops around to buy drinks/snacks.
