Earlier this month, Elon Musk announced the end of LIDAR for robot vehicles at TeslaAutonomyDay. His recent denigration of it has been repeated, but he came out swinging at investor day.
A simple reason for Tesla's choice is that there is no robocar-capable LIDAR available for a production vehicle today. Tesla is selling cars now, so they can't add a serious LIDAR system to them. However, their future plans are also LIDAR-free. Elon Musk reportedly dismissed Tesla's lidar tests as unnecessary and 'expensive'. Bloomberg said Tesla purchased lidar sensors for testing from Luminar. "Fool's errand" and "expensive," says Elon Musk about lidar technology.
