This is my first attempt at setting up these so called drawer pouches from Hobonichi. The small bits and pieces here are from last year plus some of the ones which just arrived. So far, I haven’t used any of them and they have been stored in a plastic bag.
SMALL DRAWER POUCH
"My Manga and I"
I still don't know about the small drawer pouch that I have here. First of all, it has not worked as I expected for what I thought I was going to use it for the moment. But that is entirely on me. Secondly, love the art, but I am not crazy about the thin fabric over what feels like paddings which dominates rather than supports the overall construction. It is effectively decorated foam. Love how smooth the fabric is to touch. But those random wrinkles along the seams are glaring. The stitching appears to be struggling to work with the overly thin material.
LARGE DRAWER POUCH
Mina Perhonen's "Memoria"
There are two great disappointments for me:
(1) The felt zipper tabs (instead of leather as on their zip covers), and
(2) the absence of pattern matching along the opening of the back pocket.
If they are sold at a much lower price, I would not have cared as much. I know Mina Perhonen fabric costs higher per metre than average. But price strategy is not my concern as a consumer. Only what I see for what I pay. And I am not seeing it.
OVERALL
(1) Functional specs are on point, especially for use with other Hobonichi products
(2) Not the best value for money
If you love Hobonichi covers, please be warned that their drawer pouches, at least from what I can see here, are not made to the same standard as their covers. Even if, their functional specs are as on point as ever. How everything Hobonichi fits perfectly into every pocket so precisely is truly amazing.
I have long since accepted that Hobonichi is all about their synthetic materials. (Well, when I say "long since" I meant last year, when I discovered Hobonichi, so it is early days). Plastic galore. I see both synthetic material and natural ones such as leather as each having their own issues, especially ethically and environmentally, so I have come to appreciate both for what they are, as I monitor myself so that I am able to live with myself. In the case of synthetics material used here, they made these drawer pouches light and they minimise bulk. Which is great.
But if I have to pay higher costs for things other than for their good designs, I have decided after these purchases that I prefer to pay for natural products. Such as canvas, that is equally light and sturdy.
MY OWN CONCLUSION
Although these are very efficiently designed storage system, they cost too much for what I get and for my personal taste. I do not need for everything to fit perfectly, although this is my absolute delight about the large drawer pouch. I have decided that I would prefer to pay a bit (or a lot) more and get something from another Japanese producer, The Superior Labor. Or, pay less, and get amazingly crafted organisers made of leather by Galen Leather in Turkey. (They have Tomoe River paper notebooks too). Personally, I think these drawer pouches speak to hardcore Hobonichi fans. Of which I am not. These will be my last drawer pouches from Hobonichi.
(I am not sure I will be keeping them. Please see below for my INSTAGRAM account where I will be posting my Hobonichi collection for sale).
