Home painting projects can be easy and a lot of fun with the right tools and tips. We at Pottery barn have teamed up with Sherwin-Williams to present great painting tips and home painting ideas. See Liesl, from Sherwin-Williams, share important pointers on perfect home painting.
One of the best home painting tips is choosing the right tools and equipment for your painting task. Natural bristle brushes are a great choice for oil-based paints, stains, shellacs and varnishes while polyester or polyester-nylon blend brushes should be used for latex paint. Other important home painting ideas are choosing the right brush size. Brushes come in different sizes from one inch to four inches in width. A narrow angled brush is just the right size for painting trims while a wider brush should be used for large, flat surfaces. Sash brushes are perfect for painting trims, corners and baseboards as the slanted bristles help in painting a straight line.
Liesl's home painting ideas also includes the use of rollers for painting bigger surfaces. They can be made from natural or synthetic fibers and come in different thickness described in nap or pile. The texture of the wall is an important consideration while choosing rollers. For textured surfaces like a stucco wall or a popcorn ceiling, use a roller with a thick pile to work the paint into the uneven surface. A short nap is best for smooth-textured walls. An extension handle is a practical painting tool to paint hard-to-reach spots.
Some simple painting tips are to paint one wall at a time and start painting at the base. While dipping the brush in the can, don't wipe the brush on the side of the can as it can create drips. Instead gently tap the brush to get rid of excess paint. While using a roller, start painting in two-foot squares. First, paint an N-pattern and then cross-roll to fill in. Finally, roll in one direction to smooth the surface. For a smooth finish, don't stop in the middle of a wall, instead, take a break when you reach a corner. To maintain consistent color for larger projects, mix the last third of the paint from one can to the next. Be sure to record the paint and sheen you used to make it easier to repaint in the future. A simple way to do so is to sign up to be a Sherwin-Williams preferred customer.
