This Ethics@ASU lecture, "Investigating Comparative Genocide Teaching," is presented by Lauren McArthur Harris, PhD, in the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies and the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University. Harris discusses how genocide is taught in schools, and how teachers can reimagine the way they teach to avoid creating "hierarchies of suffering." Often, history teaching standards are framed in a way that compares genocides, with the Holocaust being the most prominent example. Harris suggests that students analyze survivor testimonies in the classroom, across multiple genocidal events, to explore similarities and differences between genocides in a way that does not create a hierarchy of suffering.
