California-based nature and conservation photographer, Sandra Lee Zelasko introduces us to The Salton Sea, an invaluable habitat for an entire desert ecosystem comprised of fish, birds, reptiles, mammals, amphibians, invertebrates, aquatic and desert plants and humans which is at its breaking point.
Located in the Imperial Valley of Southern California, extreme challenges and complex restoration ideas lie ahead in order to save the sea. With the latest water diversions, over 400 species of birds along the Pacific Flyway will immediately feel the pressure of the shrinking sea. Vulnerable species will remain at risk and airborne toxic dust is estimated to increase cases of respiratory illness in human populations throughout the Southwest.
Can we rescue the Salton Sea? Where will we find the motivation for such an enormous task?
