Three straight birdies late in Sunday’s final round paved the way for Scott Simpson’s only major title. Playing one group ahead of 1982 U.S. Open champion Tom Watson, Simpson pulled ahead with birdies on 14-16, then converted a difficult up-and-down from a bad bunker lie on 17 to maintain his cushion. Simpson led Watson by one as Watson played No. 18. Watson’s birdie putt on the last ended up just short, denying him a spot in a playoff.
