In Spineless, highly acclaimed photographer Susan Middleton explores the astonishing world of marine invertebrates. Vivid portraits reveal the stunning color and variety of these creatures, and elegantly combine art and science. In this lecture, Middleton describes her innovative processes of fieldwork and photography across the Pacific Ocean, and examines how marine invertebrates acquired their vast array of body designs as well as the underlying unity that drives their spectacular diversity.
For 13 years, Middleton was the chair of the Department of Photography at the California Academy of Sciences, where she now serves as research associate. A 2009 recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship, her photographs are represented in the permanent collections of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Gallery of Art.
