DANCE IN THE GRASS. Live drumming, bodies moving, and a Back Cove backdrop. I took a class with Marita / @embodytherhythm a few winters back and was swept up by the drums and the rhythm and the movement. Not to mention the welcoming room of people. Classes have moved outside in response to the coronavirus epidemic, and on a hot summer evening like tonight, well - I wanted to throw the camera down and join in.
More info from Marita:
"Join Embody the Rhythm outside (or online) for Guinea style West African Dance classes, honoring the source and original teachers of this form. Sharing from Wabanaki territory, known under colonized terms as Portland, Maine."
Communally supported, sliding class classes are offered twice a week in Payson Park (also streaming online) Tuesdays 6:30-7:45 p.m. with live drumming and Thursdays 9-10:15 a.m. with live recordings from Guinea.
"Classes support all levels of students - no experience is needed. Movement is medicine."
Proper social distance is in effect, bring a mask to class. See embodytherhythm.com for more info and to register in advance.
