Double bond equivalents (DBE) also called Degree of Unsaturation (DU), Unsaturation Index (UI) or Index of Hydrogen Deficiency (IHD) of an organic molecule is equal to the sum of number rings and number of pi-bonds in the molecule. It is very helpful for the structure elucidation of organic molecules. DBE = (2C + 2 + N – H – X)/2, where, C is the number of carbon atoms, N, number of nitrogen atoms, H, number of hydrogen atoms and X, number of halogen atoms
