(5 Jun 1994) Britain's coastal town of Portsmouth hosted a massive "Drumhead"
multi-faith religious service for more than 12,000 D-Day veterans
on Sunday (5/6) led by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Organised
according to nationality, the veterans stood proudly on the
sprawling South Sea Common facing the English Channel, before
twelve heads of state and government and some one hundred
thousand members of the public. It was a rememberance service for
the thousands of men who crossed the Channel to Normandy on June
6, and for those who died.
