This video is part one of Engineer Pass starting off of Highway 550. This was one of the trail days (7/24) during the 2019 Land Rover National Rally sponsored by the Solihull Society Land Rover club based in Denver, Colorado. The Rally this year was in the San Juan mountains on trails around Ouray, Colorado. The region had a historic snowfall during the previous winter leaving many trails still blocked by snow or avalanche debris in mid-July. Engineer Pass is a moderately difficult 21 mile trail with scenic mountain views. The highest elevation is 12,800 feet.
The first part of the day was sunshine and clear weather as we ascended up Engineer Pass from Highway 550. Although it got colder by the time we got to the summit the skies were still clear. That was going to change as we headed back down the switchbacks from the summit and into the valley below. Storm clouds were on the horizon and we ended up in a sleet/snowstorm for a while that eventually turned to rain. That will be in part two...
