1- Define the Scope (Mission Statement - Market opportunity, broad constraints, and objectives)
2- Gather Raw Data (Initial needs lists, Interviews, surveys)
3- Interpret Raw Data (Translate customer statements into need statements)
4- Organize the Needs (Boil down to 10-20 primary needs)
5- Establish Importance (Rate)
6- Reflect on the Process and the Results (Continuously improve and critique the process)
(Gather -- Translate -- Organize -- Rate -- Reflect)
Needs vs. Specifications:
- Needs are largely independent of any particular product.
- Needs are not specific to the concept we eventually choose to pursue.
- A team should be able to identify customer needs without knowing if or how it will eventually address those needs.
* Specifications, on the other hand, do depend on the concept we select:
Depending on what is technically and economically feasible,
Depending on what competitors offer in the marketplace,
Depend on customer needs.
Why Using A Structured Method to Identify Customer Needs and Wants?
* Structured Methods allow the team to remain focused on the important issues,
* Structured Methods provide a decision process the team can follow to develop consensus,
* Structured Methods produce documentation of the process and decisions,
* Structured Methods can be evaluated and reproduced.
