"We thought that we were going to be out of the woods when we heard the weather report last week but then there was more rain coming down than actually dissipated, and so yesterday morning we heard about these unbelievable mudslides that have caused tremendous damage here. As a matter of fact, 12 homes were totally destroyed, over 30 homes were moderately damaged, but nevertheless damaged, and 25 cars were damaged or wiped out."

STORYLINE
Residents evacuated from foothill communities deluged by weekend mudslides north of Los Angeles were allowed to return home on Sunday as crews moved debris and cleared catch basins in anticipation of more rain later in the week.
The final evacuation order was lifted for about 70 homes in the Paradise Valley area of La Canada Flintridge, L.A. County Sheriff''s Dep. Guillermina Saldana said.
Only residents with valid identification were allowed back into the neighbourhood that was choked with a thick layer of mud and debris during a pummelling rain early on Saturday.
Forty-three homes in the La Canada Flintridge area were damaged and 500 more evacuated on Saturday after mud and water overflowed basins and surged into streets, taking furniture, cars and concrete barriers with it.
Nine houses were declared unsafe to enter, and more than 20 vehicles were damaged.
Los Angeles County public works crews used bulldozers and other heavy machinery to move boulders, scoop out blocked drainage systems and clear roads.
Locals picked up buckets, shovels and wheelbarrows to move the slurry from rooms and gardens, some of it three feet (one metre) deep or more.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger toured the area on Sunday, talking to officials, reporters and local people.
Schwarzenegger said the three county sites set aside for mud disposal might not be enough and urged residents to help each other in the clean-up.
Forecasters have said more rain could arrive by Tuesday.
