Johnny Farrell woke up on the final day of regulation play of the 32nd U.S. Open seven strokes behind 36-hole leader and the era’s dominant player: Bob Jones. Without the burden of expectations, Farrell, 27, shot rounds of 71-72 on the No. 4 Course at Olympia Fields, while Jones posted 73-77. Farrell led during most of the 36-hole playoff, and made a 7-foot birdie putt on the final hole to edge Jones by one stroke. Milestone: Championship entries (1,064) exceed 1,000 for the first time.
