STORYLINE:
A suicide bomber targeting a Canadian military convoy killed a child and wounded four other people including a NATO soldier on Saturday in southern Afghanistan, officials said.
The bomber rammed his explosives-packed vehicle into the passing convoy on the main highway linking the southern city of Kandahar with Herat in the west, said a regional police officer.
"The NATO convoy was patrolling on this road when a suicide attacker exploded near to the convoy. There were no casualties among the NATO forces. Three civilians were wounded and one child was killed," said Deputy District Police Chief Ghulam Azrat.
A later NATO statement said four people, including two children and a NATO soldier, were wounded in the blast. The Canadian military vehicle only had minor damages to it, officials said.
Some 36,000 troops currently serve in NATO's International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.
