STORYLINE:
The mother of an American journalist detained in Indonesia after hiding out with Aceh rebels, met her son on Thursday after obtaining permission to enter the troubled region.
Hernine Nessen was escorted to the Aceh police headquarters with her lawyer, Amir Syamsuddin, and met with her son William for about one hour.
Police have said they plan to charge William Nessen, who was arrested on June 24, with immigration violations and are still investigating allegations of espionage against him.
The military suspects Nessen of spying for the Free Aceh Movement, which has been fighting for an independent homeland in the resource-rich province on the northern tip of Sumatra Island since 1976.
The group is outlawed in Indonesia, and it is illegal to support it.
Nessen, who was working in Indonesia as a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, said he was with the guerrillas as part of his job.
His mother tried to see him on Tuesday but was forced to return to the Indonesian capital because she lacked permission to be in the region, which is under martial law.
She was scheduled to fly back to Jakarta on Friday.
On May 19, the Indonesian military launched its latest offensive to crush the rebels after a five-month cease-fire broke down.
