After a Texas woman participated in a mud run, she discovered flesh-eating bacteria had infected the cornea in one of her eyes, making her blind.

After participating in a mud run, a Texas woman is now blind in one eye because she caught some flesh-eating bacteria.

"When I opened my eye, it was just, like, white — like, the whole room was white," Brittany Williams told KTVT.

Brittany Williams said she believes when some debris flew into her eye during the mud run, it allowed the flesh-eating bacteria to infect her cornea.

It's known as necrotizing fasciitis: a bacteria that spreads quickly after entering the body through any sort of scrape or wound. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that if not treated immediately, the bacteria "can destroy soft tissue and reduce blood flow."

It's the same kind of bacteria that's been infecting beachgoers in Florida. WPEC reports eight people there have already been infected this year.

Unfortunately, Williams doesn't have health insurance to help cover her $100,000 medical bills.

Her family set up an account on crowdfunding site GoFundMe to help raise money to cover those expenses, and as of Wednesday, more than $6,800 has been donated.

KTVT reports Williams' doctors are optimistic that with surgery, she'll regain her sight.
