I was filming some recreations at the Armistace Day in Cambridge, NZ, on 11 Nov 2007 when this incident occurred.
The Unit driving the Landrovers is the Waikato Mounted Rifles, a current New Zealand army Territorial unit, with a long history. The guys on horses are WW1 reenactors of the New Zealand Mounted rifles (which consisted of the Auckland, Waikato, and Wellington Mounted rifles). The idea was to demonstrate the capabilities of todays unit compared to the originals.
Previous to this clip the guy had fallen from the same horse only 5 minutes before but had recovered fairly quickly even though he was obviously winded. On this occasion he remained on the grass for a good 5 minutes or so - the second fall must have knocked him around quite badly - you can see him rolling around like a ragdoll.
He eventually got to his feet again - but the race was cancelled.
For the record, those horses don't spook easily, the reenactors commonly fire at least one round while on horseback before dismounting and leaving the horse in the care of another reenactor while they attack as infantry.
