Panazz Players - April 12, 2021 - Anthony’s Cari-Jazz Artiste of the Day
The name Panazz Players – synonymous with ‘Pan and Jazz’ was coined by Musical Director, Barry Bartholomew in 1993. One of the concepts of the band was to select and perform music that was not usually heard on or performed on the steelpan. “The (Trinidad and Tobago) ‘Pan Ramajay competition was one of the main motivations for forming the band, coupled with the opportunity to select music that would be challenging and at times, ‘out of the box.’ “(Barry Bartholomew – Liner Notes)
It was that ‘Outta De Box’ format along with several ‘crackshot players that made the band so popular. The Panazz Players became the NUMBER ONE Steelpan ensemble in Trinidad and Tobago, with four consecutive wins at "Pan Ramajay" competition. Their local success led to several tours where they received ‘rave reviews’ from their audiences. They boasted such elite pannists as Sheldon ‘Systematic’ Webster, Dane Gulston, Carol-Ann Andrews, and Natasha Joseph, Ernesto Garcia on percussion, and Richard Joseph on drums, to name a few. As the band grew in musical complexity over the years, Bartholomew challenged the team with more complex jazz arrangements and invited jazz artistes such as Trinidadian pianist, Ralph Davies, and Barbadian saxophonist Arturo Tappin to join them in one particular live concert performance that was recorded as, “Panazz Live.” The Panazz Players won the Sunshine Music Award in 1997 for ‘Best Recording by a Steelband.’
