Ariana Grande Celebrates Her 23rd Birthday and Snaps the Whole Thing! Happy Birthday Ariana!
Ariana Grande-Butera, otherwise known as Ariana Grande is a 21-year old American pop singer and actress. Grande kicked off her ‘The Honeymoon Tour’ North America in support of her Billboard #1 album, My Everything in Kansas City, Mo. The 25-date tour will visit arenas throughout the U.S. and Canada and more.
Ariana Grande made her visit to Chicago memorable with a near-capacity crowd on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at Allstate Arena located at 6920 Mannheim Road in Rosemont, Ill. The show was an extravagant mix of music, dance, lasers, videos, pyrotechnics, costume changes, a live seven-piece band, emcee, hydraulic trap doors, and a large video screen where she was often joined by collaborators Iggy Azalea, Big Sean, and Mac Miller, and Childish Gambino.
Cashmere Cat is a Norwegian musician, producer and DJ. He is also one of the opening acts on Grande's tour and she surprised the audience by singing an impromptu performance of their next single, “Adore” to a delighted crowd.
British boy band Rixton started the night off with the announcement of their debut full-length album that was released Let the Road followed by high-energy performances of “Me and My Broken Heart”, “Appreciated,” a mash-up of Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love” and Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk,” and their third single “Hotel Ceiling,” penned by Ed Sheeran that revealed a darker, moodier side of the group.
Sporting her trademark ponytail, Grande opened the show with her demonstrated vocal prowess for the song “Bang Bang,” the Jessie J single that featured verses from Grande and rapper Nicki Minaj. The tone for the night had been set with acrobatic dancing; stunning video visuals and a crowd programmed to scream all night.
Next she performed, “Hands on Me,” which included virtual guest vocals from A$AP Ferg followed by “Big Mistake” and “Break Your Heart Right Back,” where she rode a cloud-shaped platform high above the crowd. That was followed by an massive chandelier where she belted out “Right There” in a roaring 20’s inspired performance followed by a blizzard of confetti and feathered boas.
Grande paid tribute to her grandfather by playing a recording of him telling her to persevere and pursue her music dreams—no matter what others tell her. Then, sitting atop a white grand piano with a flower-detailed train wrapped around her bodice, Grande sang the ballad “My Everything.” It was her most heartfelt vocal of the evening.
Over the course of the choreographed 90-minute performance, Grande did showcase her powerhouse range with the soulful "Tattooed Heart" and "One Last Time." Grande also displayed her prodigious pipes on “Love Me Harder” (excluding collaborator The Weeknd’s vocals), which started with her alone atop a pedestal that rose at the back of the stage with her trademark cat ears atop her head.
“Honeymoon Avenue” alluded to Grande’s Zedd-produced single, “Break Free,” which included a dazzling laser display. British singer/songwriter Imogen Heap appeared on the video screen and launched an infomercial on the Mi.mu gloves she designed specially for Grande. They are wired to electronically manipulate her voice and produce other effects with movement, which Grande demonstrated during a performance of “Why Try.”
Grande ended the night with her hit single (and eagerly anticipated), “Problem,” featuring Iggy Azalea accompanied by four large cannons and a storm of confetti. She and her entourage sang and performed with an energy that satisfied the crowd with her huge voice and equally dynamic surroundings.
Throughout the set, Grande thanked her fans for showing up. A few times, she shook hands or greeted fans confirming her sweet charm and girl-next-door innocence. At souvenir stands, fans could buy plain white cat ears on headbands whose lights would change colors (and glow in the dark) thanks to an app that was programmed to Grande’s set list. During “Pink Champagne,” all the cat ears in the arena turned pink to fans excitement.
Tickets are on sale for Grande’s remaining tour dates through the Live Nation and the Live Nation mobile app.
