This weekend there was the Night of the 10,000m PBs. The event incorporated the British Championships since 2014, as well as multiple World Championship GB Trails. Elite athletes & Olympians sometimes choose to incorporate this event into their schedule.
Paul Chelimo, the silver medalist at the Rio 2016 Olympics & Bronze in Tokyo in the 5000m, made his debut at the Night of the 10,000m PBs, setting a new meeting record and personal best,. namely in 27:12 and the 8th overall american time over the distance! However you see he is a little bit disappointed at the end of his race, he is not cheering all out. The American narrowly missed the 27:10 World Championships qualifying standard (and therefore also the olympic standard of 27:00). In the elite women’s race Mizan Alem Adane of Ethiopia won in a time of 29:59. Which was well below the olympic standard for women, she was also the only woman during the event to run the standard.
With less 10000m events on the schedule, (they are gone from the diamond league events), it is pretty hard to get a shot at the qualifying standard. With better competition and more athletes who want to meet the standard in the same race, it is more likely to run a fast race of course.
